Rough Rocks Into Beautiful Gems

This is a free formed Honey Calcite gem stone that almost became a perfect oval, but it was not my intention. I just went where the gem took me in the shaping process. It is a number 6 in hardness and is about 1.5 inches in length.

I found the stone as part of a decoration on my sister-in-law's coffee table. I thought it had potential, but at the time, I didn't know what it was, until I cut into it, using a diamond wheel. That is when I discovered it was Honey Calcite. What a find!!

I did the macro photography, using only available window light. It sure looks different now from the way it first looked -just an ordinary stone. I gave the finished gem back to my sister-in-law for Valentine's Day.

The yellow colors are the Honey Calcite, the white is calcium, the clear is quartz and the sparkles I think are mica flecks. Please, also see [link]
